Just how did this idea of a fro patro picnic get started? It all began with a can of Rotel tomatoes. One evening several members of the Fro Patro were "chatting" at Chris Sligh's official fan site, www.chris-sligh.info . The subject of food came up and Risa, who is from Arkansas, mentioned that her favorite cheese dip is made with Velveeta and Rotel tomatoes. You can imagine her shock when she found out that some of her fellow Fro Patroers had never heard of Rotel tomatoes. This began a lively discussion about different dishes from different parts of the country. Risa then suggested that we all should get together for a picnic and bring our favorite dish. She of course offered to make cheese dip. Since we all knew that Chris would soon be moving to Nashville, it was suggested that we just have the picnic there.
The idea of a picnic began to take root with the Fro Patro. We began to think of how great it would be to finally meet each other. It wasn't long before mention of the picnic popped up over on Chris's blog. Then on Sept. 8, 2007 Chris made this statement on his blog
"I was thinking what we could do is have a picnic for the Fro Patro' (or meal, depending on weather). We would advertise it to all fans through all the websites and stuff and hopefully have a few people come out. Then we would have a big show somewhere in Nashville. Could be cool.
Chris "
Well that was all that was needed to get the ball rolling. It wasn't long after that, that several of Chris's fans, who didn't live too far from Nashville, got together and started planning to make the picnic a reality. A trip to Nashville was made to scout out "a place" to have the event and check out the local Bar-B-Q.
After much anticipation, on January 24, Chris made the official announcement that the picnic would be held on July 5, 2008. So members of the Fro Patro from all across the country gathered in Nashville, Tennessee to spend a weekend with each other and their "Idol", Chris Sligh. We're doing it again on July 4, 2009. Just think, it all started with a can of tomatoes.
